capacity building, therapy/counselling and psychosocial recovery
NDIS Counselling & Capacity Building for Adults
Individualised therapeutic and practical support focused on understanding what is happening, developing the skills to manage it, and building greater confidence and independence in everyday life. Available as weekly hourly sessions (online only) or blocks of hours as requested and required.
Toward Tomorrow provides NDIS counselling, capacity building, skills development and psychosocial recovery coaching for adults.
Services are available in person across Lake Macquarie and parts of Newcastle and the Central Coast, as well as online via Zoom Australia-wide.
I work with self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants.
NDIS Counselling & Therapy
As a Master’s-qualified Counsellor and Psychotherapist and PACFA Certified Practising Counsellor, I provide counselling where therapeutic support is appropriate to a participant’s disability-related needs and NDIS goals.
NDIS-funded counselling is different from general counselling. The work needs to relate to your disability-related needs and have a clear connection to your functioning, independence, skills or participation.
This may include work around emotional regulation, anxiety and overwhelm, trauma, triggers, confidence and self-worth, relationships, boundaries, communication, adjustment, decision-making and developing strategies to manage challenges more effectively.
Counselling isn’t simply about talking through what happened. My approach focuses on understanding what is happening, why it may be happening, what is maintaining it and what we can practically do with that understanding.
Capacity Building & Skills Development
Capacity building has a different purpose.
Rather than doing things for you, the focus is on developing and strengthening the skills you need to participate more fully in your own life and manage everyday situations with greater confidence and independence.
This might involve working on emotional regulation, communication, self-advocacy, boundaries, decision-making, problem-solving, routines, planning and organisation, managing appointments, social confidence, community participation or practical everyday skills.
Where appropriate, we can work on these skills in the situations where you actually need to use them — not just talk about them in an appointment.
I do not provide general support work or transport services.
Practical or community-based work is provided where there is a genuine capacity-building purpose connected to your individual goals.
Psychosocial Recovery Coaching
If you live with psychosocial disability, Psychosocial Recovery Coaching provides another type of NDIS support.
Recovery coaching is not counselling with a different name.
The focus is on working alongside you to better understand and manage the challenges that affect your everyday life, build your capacity and resilience, strengthen your skills and decision-making, and have greater involvement in the direction of your own supports and recovery.
Depending on what you need, we may work on:
Understanding your strengths and support needs • Recovery planning • Building confidence and resilience • Decision-making • Managing periods when you need more support • Understanding and navigating your NDIS plan • Identifying and organising appropriate supports • Connecting with community, mainstream and mental-health services • Building greater independence and choice
I don’t believe recovery means somebody else deciding what a successful life should look like for you.
The work is about understanding what matters to you, what gets in the way and what will help you have greater capacity and control over your own life.
That is consistent with the current NDIA role: recovery coaches support people with psychosocial disability to build capacity and resilience, organise supports, strengthen skills and decision-making and connect with community and mainstream services.
Different Support for Different Needs
There can be overlap between these services, but they are not interchangeable.
Counselling & Therapy focuses on therapeutic work and understanding the emotional, psychological and behavioural patterns affecting you.
Capacity Building & Skills Development focuses on learning, practising and applying skills that increase everyday functioning and independence.
Psychosocial Recovery Coaching is specifically for people with psychosocial disability and combines recovery-focused capacity building with navigating, organising and connecting the different supports around you. The NDIA also describes recovery coaching as helping participants coordinate supports and maintain engagement during periods of increased support needs.
Which service is appropriate depends on your needs, goals and the funding available in your NDIS plan.
Online NDIS Support Australia-Wide
Counselling, capacity building and psychosocial recovery coaching can be provided via Zoom Australia-wide, where online delivery is appropriate to the service and your needs.
If you live within Lake Macquarie or the surrounding service area, you can choose between online and in-person appointments.
Communication & Accessibility
I have functional Auslan skills, although I am not a fluent Auslan interpreter.
Where required, an approved support worker or Auslan interpreter (TERP) can participate in an appointment to support communication and accessibility.
If you have particular communication or accessibility requirements, let me know before your appointment so we can determine the most appropriate arrangements.
Using Your NDIS Funding
Toward Tomorrow welcomes self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants.
The particular support you can use depends on the funding available in your plan, your goals and the purpose of the support.
You don’t need to understand NDIS categories or support-item numbers before contacting me. If you’re unsure whether your funding is suitable, we can look at the relevant part of your plan before commencing services.
Psychosocial Recovery Coaching in particular is a recognised NDIS-funded role for participants with psychosocial support needs. Under the current system, recovery coaches also need to participate in the NDIA’s request-for-service process for relevant new plans in order to claim from that plan.
The Focus Is Your Capacity
Whether we’re working therapeutically, developing practical skills or working within psychosocial recovery, the aim isn’t for me to take control of your life or make decisions for you.
My role is to bring professional knowledge and experience, understand what is getting in the way and work alongside you to develop greater understanding, skills, confidence and capacity.
The goal is greater choice, greater involvement and greater capacity to manage your own life.

Building Capacity
Building Emotional Strength & Stability
Support to help you better understand your emotions, recognise patterns, and build practical skills to manage how you feel in everyday life. This includes identifying triggers, developing strategies to reduce overwhelm, and learning ways to respond to challenges with greater calm and clarity.
Together, we focus on strengthening your ability to regulate emotions in real-life situations, whether that’s at home, in relationships, or when engaging with the community. You will be supported to build confidence in managing stress, navigating difficult moments, and maintaining emotional stability over time.
This is a collaborative and supportive process, where we work at your pace to develop tools that are realistic and meaningful for you. The goal is to increase your independence, improve your day-to-day functioning, and help you feel more in control of your emotional wellbeing.
